It’ll Never Be Perfect
Perfection is elusive. It may seem attainable and for others, that may be entirely true. For me, I’ve learned it’s a reason to not move forward. For me, I’ve learned it’s a reason to find another way. For me, I’ve learned it’s a cop out and and way to not implement. For me, I’ve learned it’s a way to say “I may as well not do anything, since I can’t be perfect at this one thing.” Each and every one of those things sound good and make sense and they are all nonsense.
I may very well never be perfect. But what if perfection isn’t the goal. What if the goal is experiential? What if the process is the important thing? What if I’m supposed to learn from one iteration to the next? What if it’s about stumbling forward or failing forward? What if perfection isn’t the goal, but more the stick and carrot?
I’m not sure about any of it. I’m sure that I can make things better each iteration. I’m sure I can go to market with what I have. I’m sure I can put my best foot forward and see what happens. I’m sure I can live by one of the Four Agreements and “Always do my best.” My best is quite different from perfect. It’s my best as a snapshot in time. It can and will hopefully change. Best, in the moment, is quite different from perfection in the future.
Today, Thursday, February 2, 2023, I am grateful that:
Herb and I spoke earlier. Our conversations are still a bright spot. I’ve gotten to know a bunch of people in my life and some of them you simply outgrow and have nothing more than superficial conversations with. I’m happy that’s not the case with Herb.
I’m still thirsty to learn these new tools I’ve been afforded. It’s funny how my mind works. I don’t like the actual implementation as much as figuring out how things work. Once I’ve got the pieces of the puzzle in place, I’m ready to move on to something else. It’s about the completed puzzle or task, not about making sure others actually enjoy the puzzle.
I’m making more progress towards my weekly goal. It’s a bit small, but it’s a way to keep score. I’m ok with keeping score and holding myself accountable to others outside of my circle. It’s not fun, but I’ll figure out how to enjoy being uncomfortable since that’s exactly what I need at this moment in time.
Can you discern the difference between doing your best and perfection?
Are you aware that your best may not be perfection?
How do you resolve the two?
Be Great. Be Grateful!!!
